Rangers’ first-half defeat saw them lose 3-1 to Porto at the Estadio del Rey, ending their dismal Europa League campaign.
Gers striker Jeddy Gassama gave the visitors the lead after just six minutes but they soon collapsed as some disastrous defending and own goals from teenagers Rodrigo Moura, Francisco Moura and Emmanuel Fernandez left Danny Rohr’s side reeling before the break, with Portugal comfortably fending off an improving Govan side after the break.
Rangers were out before kick-off but it was the first defeat in nine games for an Ibrox side who reverted to their early-season form at times in the first half.
The Light Blues, who exit the competition with four points from eight league games, return to the Scottish Premiership on Sunday when they face Hibernian at Easter Road, hoping to be at least four points behind leaders Hearts.
Rohr was always going to keep his eye on Hibs, even though three of his January signings – Danish winger Andreas Skow Olsen, Danish midfielder Toki Chukwani and Belgian left-back Tour Lomens – as well as Nedim Bajrami are not eligible.
The Gers boss made five changes, with Max Ahrens, Mohamed Diomande, Findlay Curtis, Gassama and Youssef Cermiti joining the squad.
Francesco Farioli’s side, who have lost just one game in seven European games, are ninth and seeking automatic qualification, but the home fans were soon in for a surprise when Curtis’ cross from the right slotted Gassama past Portugal international Diogo Costa.
However, Porto soon took control of the situation. In the 27th minute, when Gers defender Jayden Megoma toed the ball towards his own goal in an attempt to clear the ball, 18-year-old Rodrigo Moura quickly controlled and shot from close range.
VAR checked for a potential penalty against Porto minutes later when Fernandez made a last-minute tackle inside the Light Blues penalty area, leaving Pepe on the floor, but play continued.
Towards the end of the first half, Rangers conceded two goals in five minutes.
In the 36th minute, captain James Tavernier and goalkeeper Jack Butland tripped while trying to handle a long ball into the penalty area, leaving Francisco Moura to ricochet into the net from a yard out.
In the 41st minute, an off-balance Fernandez headed a header into his own goal from a corner kick, adding insult to injury for the Gers.
Govan tried to fight off Rohr in the second half, who used all five substitutes, and are looking forward to the Easter Road game at the weekend.
In the 63rd minute, Gers midfielder Nico Raskin saved Costa and the corner kick caused no danger.
Butland then found himself in trouble in his own penalty area but substitute John Souttar filled in and Porto had several close calls as Rangers bowed out of the game.
