Newcastle United booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round by beating Bromley 3-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Magpies were riding high heading into this cup tie, and the Toon Army would have thought they would enjoy a quiet afternoon. Newcastle’s stellar form has seen them climb to fifth place Premier League TableAnd they recently made a giant leap into the Carabao Cup final by beating Arsenal 2-0 away from home.
However, Eddie Howe’s side were quickly brought back down to earth by the Ligue 2 side. The manager’s heavily rotated XI were stunned in the early stages. Cameron Congreve achieved what the Gunners had failed to do in midweek by breaching Martin Dubravka’s defense with a curling effort from distance.
It didn’t take long for that Premier League The side restored parity, however, with Lewis Miley, who has rarely featured this season since returning from a long-term injury, roaring home Newcastle’s equaliser.
The hosts took full control after the result and should have taken the lead through William Osula soon after Miley’s leveller. NewcastleTheir dominance for the rest of the first half was unsurprising as they enjoyed 86% of the ball, but Bromley were stubborn enough to go into the half-time break at 1-1.
There was no fuss around Howe when Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes came on early in the second half, and the former scored a penalty from 12 yards to hand Newcastle their first lead of the cup tie three minutes after the restart.
Osula, on a rare outing since arriving in the summer, added a third for the hosts with a belting finish – his first for the club. Newcastle’s second-half composure allowed Howen to add 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi to proceedings on his competitive debut, and the Magpies held on to their two-goal advantage in the closing stages without any fuss.
