A House committee is investigating Jeffrey Epstein labored for six months to question the former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clintonbut once they finally had a chance to sit down with some of the highest-ranking officials who will forever be dismissed by Congress, the sessions deviated from the track with a leaked photo, talk of the pizzagate conspiracy theory and questions about the disclosure of government information on UFOs.
Videos released Monday by the House Oversight Committee on deposits for Bill and Hillary Clinton from last week showed how in general the former Democratic president distanced himself from Epstein, even as he said it was important for anyone with information about Epstein’s abuse to come forward. Hillary Clinton repeatedly told the committee that she had no recollection of meeting with Epstein during the sometimes heated questioning hours.
Lawmakers are trying to meet need for a count about Epstein, who killed himself in 2019 in New York while facing charges for sex trafficking and abuse of underage girls. High-status men around the world have been forced to resign over revelations about their ties to Epstein, but so far there have been few signs in the US of serious legal consequences to come.
After last week’s depositions, Republicans appear to be continuing to scrutinize the Clintons for their decades-old connection to Epstein and his ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.
Hillary Clinton’s controversial deposition
The closed doors show how Republican lawmakers sometimes can’t resist the sight of questioning a couple who for decades have led the Democratic Party.
Hillary Clinton’s deposition on Thursday had barely begun when it was stopped because Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert sent a photo of Hillary Clinton in session to a conservative influencer who posted it online. It violated the committee’s protocol for depositions and briefly threatened to derail the session.
“I’m done with it if you do that,” Hillary Clinton said. “You can despise me from now until the cows come home.”
Both sides agreed to continue. But as the afternoon wore on, Hillary Clinton began to lose her patience with repeated questions from Republicans about whether she had a connection to Epstein. “I’m so tired of answering that question,” he said at one point.
He also sparred with Republican Rep. Nancy Mace when asked about her connection to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Hillary Clinton worked with Lutnick after the Sept. 11, 2001 and became visibly agitated and slammed his palm on the table as he responded to Mace.
Boebert, R-Colo., also asked Hillary Clinton if there were emails in the Epstein case files that referenced pizzagatealleging that Democratic Party insiders were hiding child sex slaves in a Washington pizza parlor.
Hillary Clinton responded by saying, “I can’t believe you’re pointing this out” and reminded him that the conspiracy theory resulted in a man carrying a gun into a restaurant in Washington.
However, Republicans have found some agreement with Hillary Clinton when it comes to providing more disclosure of what information the government has obtained on UFOs.
Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., asked the former secretary of state for his opinion on the release of more information, and he agreed that any release should not include national security information but that “this is an issue of real importance to many people.”
Democrats and Republicans questioned Bill Clinton
On Friday, Bill Clinton faced investigative questions from Republicans and Democrats about photos of the former president that were released as part of the Epstein case files.
The former Democratic president said he first remembers meeting Epstein when he boarded the financier’s private jet in 2002 for humanitarian work with the Clintons, and they separated the following year.
Whether the subject was a note Clinton wrote for Epstein’s 50th birthday or their trip together for the Clinton Foundation, she described their relationship as more than “a good relationship.” Bill Clinton described an arrangement with Epstein in which the financier provided his private jet for humanitarian trips in exchange for Clinton discussing politics and economics with him.
Larry Summers, who worked as treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, helped make that connection, Clinton said. But Clinton said they parted ways after she noticed Epstein was less interested in humanitarian work.
“We were friends, but I didn’t know him well enough to say we were friends,” he said.
Epstein visited the White House several times during Clinton’s presidency, and there are photos of them shaking hands. Clinton told lawmakers she did not recall those interactions.
In response to questions from a Democratic lawmaker about a photo showing him in a pool with a woman whose face has been redacted, the former president said he did not know the woman and did not have sex with her.
He said the photo was from a trip to Brunei for charitable work and many people in their travel party were swimming. He also said he was unaware that a young woman who allegedly worked as a masseuse and massaged his neck on a flight was actually a victim of sexual abuse.
“There was nothing I saw when I was around him that made me realize he was selling women,” he told the committee.
He said he had visited Epstein’s New York City town home, but repeatedly said he had never visited Epstein’s private island or other properties.
Asked by Republicans if they were talking about young women or girls together, Clinton emphatically replied: “No.”
Clinton acknowledged that she maintained a closer relationship with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s ex-girlfriend and confidant. But he maintained that it was mostly because of the close connection with each other. He also said he “must be punished” for his conviction on sex trafficking charges.
What Bill Clinton said about Trump
One line of questioning sparked curiosity from lawmakers, and that’s what Clinton had to say about President Donald Trump. He made it clear that he believes it is important for anyone, including presidents, to come forward and testify to their knowledge of Epstein.
Clinton also shared how she and Trump briefly discussed Epstein at a charity golf tournament more than 20 years ago. He said Trump never “told me anything to make me think he was involved in anything inappropriate about Epstein,” but also said the two men had a disagreement over a real estate deal.
Republican lawmakers left the deposition pointing to Clinton’s words and argued that they showed no evidence that Trump had done anything wrong in his own relationship with Epstein.
Democrats, meanwhile, said Clinton’s testimony countered what Trump said recently about why he and Epstein were fighting. Trump told reporters they had a disagreement because Epstein hired people from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
