The main event of the upcoming Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view card will feature two elite fighters with contrasting styles, as former WBA super lightweight world champion Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz takes on former WBA super featherweight world champion Lamont Roach Jr.
Simply put, the fighter who can execute and control the tempo of the fight will win this highly anticipated fight. The event is scheduled for Saturday evening, December 6, at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Cruz and Roach had the same idea of winning and then immediately went into another big fight. Ironically, both Cruz and Roach were thrust into the spotlight after their heated battles with Gervonta “The Tank” Davis.
Back in December 2021, Pitbull Cruz made his mainstream boxing debut, challenging Tank Davis for the WBA (regular) lightweight title. Cruz got off to a good start, moving forward aggressively and landing shots to the body.
Cruz was the aggressor throughout the fight, pushing forward and forcing Davis to fight on the back foot. It was a competitive fight, but at the end of 12 rounds, Gervonta Davis was declared the winner.
Three years later, Isaac Cruz defeated Rolly Romero in the eighth round to win his first world title. In his first defense, Cruz lost the WBA super lightweight title to Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela via split decision.
Cruz bounced back with a unanimous decision victory over Angel Fierro. In his next fight, Cruz defeated Omar Salcido to win the vacant WBC interim title. Now, Isaac Cruz (28 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss, 18 KOs) is about to face a highly skilled and motivated man.
Back in March 2025, a DMV fight took place in Brooklyn, where Baltimore’s Gervonta Davis defended her WBA world title against Washington, D.C.’s Lamont Roach. In the first round, Roach controlled the tempo of the round by limiting Davis to one punch.
Later in the eighth, Lamont Roach knocked out Gervonta Davis with a hard right hand. There was a controversial moment in the ninth round when Roach landed a punch and Davis took a step back and dropped to one knee.
Instead of making the right call and awarding a knockdown, the referee decided to issue a warning to Davis. It was a back-and-forth battle that ended in a draw.
Now, Lamont Roach Jr. (25 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses, 10 KOs) is ready to test himself in a different way. When he fought Davis, Roach faced a fierce counterpuncher, but on December 6, Roach will fight an aggressive fighter who stays on the front foot.
Lamont Roach is a skilled counter-puncher with a high ring IQ, a powerful jab, good use of angles, good punch placement, and responsible defense. His opponent, Isaac Cruz, often defended high and applied constant pressure.
The fight featured Roach’s sharpness versus Cruz’s aggression. Roach wants to slow down the fight and use his technical advantage to punch from the outside.
His opponent, Pitbull Cruz, wanted a close fight. Cruz looked to stay on the front foot and increase the pace of the fight, landing a flurry of punches.
Isaac Cruz vs. Lamont Roach for the interim WBC super lightweight title is an interesting matchup as both fighters have styles that can knock the other out. The question is, which boxer can successfully control range and distance, execute the game plan correctly, and score a signature victory?
