Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that Jack Grealish will have to step up his game if he is to regain his place in the team’s starting lineup.
Grealish, a £100m signing in 2021, Not a single club failed to score in 2024 And recently lost his place in the City squad to summer arrival Savinho, who stole the show. Guardiola’s side beat West Ham United 4-1 at the weekend.
Asked why Savinho was playing ahead of Grealish, Guardiola pulled no punches with a stern warning to the Englishman.
“It’s easy,” Guardiola said. “As much as he sees himself, he will see the competition and he will have to compete himself. Savinho is in a better position than Jack and everything and that’s why I played Savinho.
“Do I want Jack to win the Troubles? Yes, I want that. But I try to be honest with myself about it.
“You can say it’s unfair. If you feel that way, that’s fine. But you have to prove it and say, ‘OK, I’m going to fight Savinho, every single day, every week in that position. Eligible to play. And every month.
“I fought a lot for (Grealish), I fought a lot for him to come here, to do it again and again, and I know he can do it, because I’ve seen him. I’ve seen his level and I Wish every single training session and every single game, if not, there’s Savinho.
“Is there anyone in this room who thinks Savinho doesn’t deserve to play now? No, he deserves to play. That’s why I play him – because he produces. That’s why he played. I have no doubts about that. No. The quality of Jack or any of these players, otherwise they wouldn’t be here.
“But they have to be at your best right now, at 3 o’clock this afternoon. It’s not about what they’ve done or will do, it’s about 3 o’clock. An hour and 30 minutes, or an hour and 45 minutes that we are. Play Going forward, the onus is not on me but on the players and they have to deliver every game.
