open artificial intelligence A standalone app launched on Monday AI– Supported coding assistant Codex, temporarily available to all ChatGPT users apple computer.
OpenAI says the new app has a simple interface and is designed to act as a “command center,” allowing software developers to easily manage multiple AI agents simultaneously. An AI agent is a tool that can independently complete tasks (such as writing code) on behalf of the user.
AI coding assistants have exploded in popularity over the past year, with OpenAI stating that more than 1 million developers have used Codex in the past month. The company initially launched Codex in April and made it generally available in October.
New Codex app is part of OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to attract users and market share from competitors Anthropic selection and cursorwhich provide developers with their own popular products.
CEO of Open Artificial Intelligence Sam Altman The Codex app is “the most popular internal product we’ve ever had,” the company said in a briefing with reporters on Friday.
“It’s been a really great thing for us to use OpenAI recently,” Altman said. “‘I’ve been staying up late excitedly building all kinds of things myself.'”
OpenAI says that in Codex applications, agents run in separate threads organized by project, and users can view changes to agents in these threads. Agents can run in parallel and developers can collaborate with them while working on long-running tasks.
The Codex app also includes a library of “skills,” such as image generation, that can help agents with tasks beyond generating code, the company said.
Typically, access to the Codex is included with a ChatGPT subscription, meaning Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu subscribers can use it and purchase additional credits as needed.
But as the app launches on Monday, OpenAI said it will also make Codex available to free users and the low-cost Go subscription tier for a limited time. This means that all ChatGPT users can use Codex on all its available interfaces, including applications for Apple computers.
To allow existing Codex users to take advantage of the benefits, OpenAI said it will temporarily double the rate limits on its paid plans.
“As long as I can input new ideas as fast as I can, that’s the limit of what can be built,” Altman said. “It’s very cool to watch.
