It’s not every day that an actor in a successful live action anime project gets to sit down and interview its creator in their native language, but Netflix’s One Piece The star Iñaki Godoy did just before the show second season.
In a recent video from Netflix’s Still watching the YouTube ChannelMonkey D. Luffy actor Godoy sat down Eiichiro Oda in the set of A piece Location of Cape Town in South Africa to discuss what lies ahead on the Grand Line in season two, and how Luffy became such a beloved character.
“I saw some of the actual filming, and especially the props, a lot of the sets, the special effects, the making of the wigs and the costumes, the stunts,” Oda said. “I saw a lot of things and I was really moved by everyone’s dedication.”
When Godoy asked Oda if he thought the acting was good, Oda responded saying, “Yes.” Naturally, Godoy burst into infectious giggles, making Oda laugh as well. Godoy’s next question, asked in remarkably fluent Japanese despite having just started learning the language in January, asked Oda why he made the events of the second season so challenging to adapt, because The first season of Straw Hat was already a big undertaking. Another question, mind you, that Oda laughed when Godoy said how “big and stupid” their adventure was before it went to the Grand Line.
“It’s tough. I am very tired,” said Godoy.
“In that universe, the Grand Line is the worst on the ocean. The audience should be shocked. That’s why there are giants, and, of course, many hunters, ” replied Oda teasing the adventures that await in the future. “It should be a season full of new, surprising elements. So it will be more challenging.”
Godoy’s final question asks Oda how he came to be Luffy and he became a character full of depth and charm, despite seeming like a simple person at first blush.
“Luffy is like a child to me. When you become an adult and join a company, you can’t always do what you want. Entering society often means losing freedom. Luffy has a child at heart, so he will do what he wants,” said Oda. “That aspect is probably, for the adults already toiling in society, and the children about to enter society, what makes Luffy so attractive.”
Oda did not hesitate to praise Godoy’s way of congratulating him for freeing Luffy and inspiring viewers around the world. The two then shared a loving embrace. It’s so sweet.

Continuing their usual secrecy, Netflix and Tomorrow Studios have not yet revealed the actor who will bring the doctor of the Straw Hat pirates, Tony Tony Chopper, to life. All we see of the industrious reindeer is a shot of him from behind, which proves—to the dismay of some fans—that he’s not a muppet but a little CGI dude. Hopefully next time One Piece sit-down (or teaser trailer) will show Chopper in all his beautiful glory.

on io9 review in the first season, we praised the Netflix show for not requiring viewers to invest in the anime to appreciate it, writing, “The show is clean. It was great. Everything came together, and at the end of the season, despite Luffy yelling again, I wanted a second season.
Along with a second live-action season, Netflix also has plans in motion for an anime remake, titled. The One Pieceanimated by WIT Studio. In short, now is as good a time as any to enter One Piece—whether through the manga, live action show, ongoing anime, or its upcoming remake.
