The freshman had nine catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in his first meeting. He vowed to bring a different game to Oregon State than on Oct. 12.

“They’re going to see a completely different player than they did last time,” he told reporters before the Rose Bowl. via ESPN. “Even Brian Hartline, the running back coach, told me the other day that I’m a completely different player from the first time we played Oregon State to now. It starts with knowing the game plan and understanding What the defense wants to do.”

Smith expressed disappointment in the loss to Michigan in the final regular season game of the season. He suggested that many were taken tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

He had six catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns in that game.

“Well, Tennessee, you saw what they tried to do and what happened,” he said. “Just take the picture and put it on them and keep doing it.”

Smith has been compared to some of the great receivers to come out of Ohio State in recent years and was selected for top honors such as Big Ten Receiver of the Year and second-team All-American.

However, he’s trying to put things in perspective.

“I mean, it’s a blessing, but I can’t let that get into my head,” he said. “I know I have two or three years left to develop and get better.”
