Birmingham City is launching a ground-breaking £3.5m scheme to support their work in the community after an OFSTED inspection of one of its partner schools revealed a significant improvement in its fortunes.
King Edward VI Balamwood Academy is a school where 97% of pupils receive free school meals and was the first school to convert to an academy school through the Birmingham City Trust Schools Partnership scheme.
Foundation coaches have been working on an academic timetable every day since schools inspector OFSTED gave Balanwood a ‘requires improvement’ rating last year.
Balaam Wood has just been upgraded two levels to ‘good’ in its latest assessment, with OFSTED pointing to a partnership with Birmingham City as illustrating how they go above and beyond for pupils.
The City of Birmingham has wasted no time in building on this foundation and is now preparing to launch the 1875 Club to provide funding for schools to deliver projects in and around different parts of the city.
The 1875 Club pays tribute to the club’s birth 149 years ago and is a private members’ club offering 1,875 people the opportunity to donate £1,875 to join the football club’s efforts to help regenerate the city.
The premise of the club is that the city has been good to a lot of people and many people owe their success to Birmingham.
They hope the innovative scheme will raise £3.5 million to support the club’s work with schools and other community projects, giving those best able the opportunity to support parts of the city in need.
