The Trump administration insists it is actually at war with alleged “narco-terrorists”, amid growing fears of US military action. “The laws of war don’t really apply here, because the United States is not at war with drug dealers,” explains former New York Assistant Attorney General Reed Brody. Mr Brody is currently an ICJ commissioner, human rights lawyer, war crimes prosecutor and author of ‘To Catch a Dictator’. “Even if we are at war, the people on these ships are civilians,” Mr. Brody warns, adding that under international law it is a crime to target civilians. Mr. Brody also claims that Venezuela accounts for only a small fraction of the drugs smuggled into the US. But what’s even more telling: “Trump pardoned the former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was serving a 45-year sentence for running a major cocaine ring.”
