As speculation continues over whether California Gov. Gavin Newsom will run for president in 2028, a business group unveiled a billboard in New York’s Times Square on Tuesday comparing the Democratic leader to one of the NFL’s worst (some would say worst) teams: new york jets.
The California Business and Industry Alliance (CABIA), which announced the ad, said the ad coincides with Super Bowl week and represents Newsom’s record on homelessness and high taxes.

“Gavin Newsom should take a hard look at how his game plan is playing out in California before trying to prop up state politics,” said CABIA founder Tom Manzo. “Just like New Yorkers feel about the Jets, Californians expect more from Governor Newsom than they see.”
The billboard features a green background in Jets colors, with Newsom wearing a Jets jersey and “CaliforniaThere is a “coat of arms” on the front.
“He has a worse record than the Jets,” the billboard read. Ranked No. 1 for high taxes and homelessness. “

Newsom has been heavily criticized by Republicans for the state’s homelessness crisis, which has grown over the past few years despite billions of dollars spent.
A 2024 state audit found that California failed to track the results of an unprecedented $24 billion spent to address the problem. Additionally, California has one of the highest tax burdens and costs of living in the country.
At the same time, comparisons to the Jets serve to highlight Newsom’s failure to govern the country. The Jets finished the 2025 NFL season with a 3-14 record, frustrating the team’s already demoralized fan base.
The team lost its first seven games of the season before recording one win.
