Jeff Hafley addressed Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s future with the team on Saturday. The coach was hired on Jan. 19, replacing Mike McDaniel, who had been with the team for four years.

“Me and Tua had a great conversation,” Hafley said on “The Jim Rome Show.” “We discuss a lot of things, but ultimately it will come down to who we think gives us the best chance to win.”

Tagovailoa is in the second year of a four-year contract with the Dolphins worth $212.4 million. However, his performance has declined since his contract extension in 2024. The quarterback has battled injuries that have kept him out of six games in 2024, and his numbers haven’t improved this season.

He was coming off the worst season of his career, passing for 2,666 yards and 20 touchdowns before being benched.

On January 23, Hafley shared his expectations for an ideal starting quarterback, but many felt Tagovailoa didn’t fit that description.

“I want a winner,” Hafley said, via NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe. “I want a guy that has it mentally. He’s got to have it physically. But I want a guy that’s got it here (pointing to head), I want a guy that’s got it in his heart. I want a guy that can walk into a room and everybody’s like, ‘That’s our quarterback.'”

Dolphins GM expresses doubts about Tua Tagovailoa

Jeff Hafley isn’t the only one unsure about this Tua TagovailoaMiami’s future. Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan discussed the future of the team and its quarterback position on Jan. 22.

“Whether it’s Tua or anybody else, to sit here today and tell you that I know exactly what we’re going to do or which path we’re going to take, that would be a lie because there’s so much work to do,” Sullivan told reporters.

“There are so many conversations that need to be had right now. We have to figure this out. We will, but today is not the day that I can give you the answer.”

Tagovailoa is under contract through 2028.
