An Indian Navy speedboat lost control and crashed into a passenger ship off the coast of Mumbai, killing at least 13 people, an Indian Navy spokesman said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said three navy personnel died and more than 100 others were rescued.
Video of the incident posted online showed the speedboat circling before hitting the ferry, which later capsized.
The Indian Navy said an “engine failure” occurred.
The private ferry was hit by a speedboat on its way to the popular tourist destination Koh Chang Caves.
“A Navy ship undergoing engine testing lost control and collided with a passenger ship,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement, adding that it regretted the “tragic loss of life.”
A passenger on the boat told the ABP Majha news channel: “The speedboat hit our boat, water started entering our boat and the boat capsized. The driver asked us to wear life jackets.”
The passenger, who asked not to be named, said: “I swam for 15 minutes and was rescued by another boat.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted: “The boat accident in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the families of the victims. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
