Elon Musk’s xAI said late Wednesday that Grok will no longer be able to create sexy images of real people on its social network X based on user prompts, after weeks of consumer and political backlash and regulatory investigations.

“We have taken technical steps to prevent Grok accounts from allowing editing of images of real people in revealing outfits such as bikinis,” xAI wrote in a post shared through the X Safety account on the site, formally known as Twitter. “This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said his office is investigating Silicon Valley-based xAI for its apparent “mass production of non-consensual deepfake intimate images.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been a supporter of Musk and his company, said in a post Wednesday morning that “xAI’s decision to create and host a breeding ground for predators to spread non-consensual explicit AI deepfakes, including images of children digitally removing their clothes, is despicable.”

In recent weeks, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, France and Australia, as well as the European Commission, have announced investigations. Both Indonesia and Malaysia have issued temporary bans on Grok.

The announcements come amid widespread criticism that Grok enables X users to easily generate sexual and violent images based on real photos of people on the social network through simple text-based prompts.

In the United States, three Democratic senators called for apple and Google Removed X and Grok apps from its app store until the company makes changes to prevent the easy creation of non-consensual explicit images.

Musk’s company also said in a post on Wednesday that image creation and editing through Grok on X will only be available to paying subscribers.

Earlier on Wednesday, Musk challenged his followers on X to “break the Grok image moderation.” “By enabling NSFW, Grok should allow upper-body nudity from imaginary adults (rather than real adults),” he said, comparing such content to what is seen in R-rated movies. He noted that Grok’s setup will also “vary in other regions based on each country’s laws.”
