Legend MS Dhoni has been directed by the Madras High Court to pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh in a defamation case related to the 2013 IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal. The court ordered Dorney to pay for the transcription and translation of the CDs submitted as evidence in the case, which is still ongoing.
In 2014, Dhoni had filed a defamation suit worth Rs 100 crore against two media organizations, a journalist and a retired IPS officer, accusing them of making false statements. He has always denied all charges, and the case has been delayed over the years by multiple interim applications and appeals.

According to a report in Bar and Bench, Ms Dhoni will have to deposit the amount into the Chief Justice Relief Fund on or before March 12, 2026. The money will be used to pay for the transcription and translation of the CDs submitted as evidence in the case.

The job requires an interpreter and a typist and takes about three to four months, the report said. The court noted that in this case the involvement of an official interpreter made it necessary for the plaintiff to bear the costs of the work performed.
“Under normal circumstances, in a suit filed by the plaintiff, the plaintiff would have had to complete the said work and file the documents with the plaintiff. Taking into account external circumstances, it was necessary to engage an official interpreter and as stated in the earlier order dated October 28, 2025, the plaintiff was obliged to pay the fees for the work done,” the court said.
MS Dhoni defamation case to be heard next on March 12
The next hearing in the case is March 12. In 2025, the High Court ordered the trial to begin and appointed a defense commissioner to record Ms Dhoni’s evidence outside court, citing security concerns related to his celebrity status.
Dhoni had filed a Rs 100-crore defamation case in 2014, accusing retired IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar, Zee Media Corporation, News Nation Network and journalist Sudhir Chaudhary of wrongly linking his name to the IPL 2013 betting scam. Kumar was involved in the scandal investigation.
In 2023, a court judge found Kumar guilty of contempt of court over remarks made in court documents and sentenced him to 15 days of simple imprisonment. The Supreme Court later upheld the verdict. The case was repeatedly delayed due to numerous applications and appeals filed by the parties.
