Custom popcorn buckets have become popular in recent years, with moviegoers picking up themed buckets for BAD, Supermanand Avatar: Fire and Ashesjust to name a few. It’s already there Dune: Part II bucket that grabbed the headlines for being small, shall we say, TIPS. But as weird as some of these popcorn buckets are, there might not be anything more weird than the buckets you’ll see in theaters this weekend. There is now a Melania Trump popcorn bucket, in honor of the new “documentary” on the First Lady.
The “limited-edition” Melania popcorn bucket will be available for $12.99 in theaters showing the film starting this Friday. The new items have already appeared on eBay, although it is not clear where the items came from.
We asked representatives for the Regal movie theater chain if this was the first bucket of popcorn for a documentary. The answer is that it depends on what you consider a “documentary.”
“Since the release of Barbie as of July 21, 2023, Regal regularly offers collective film-themed content across a wide range of film genres including many non-fiction releases such as Andrea Bocelli 30: The Celebration from Fathom Entertainment, blurring the lines in the documentary category,” Kevan Karr, senior communications manager at Regal, told Gizmodo via email.
“Many films about musicians cover the history of the band and their music, so it’s difficult to claim Melania is the first documentary that deals with a collectible container,” Karr continued.
the Melania The film is expected to bomb at the box office this week, according to industry experts. Amazon paid MGM $40 million for the distribution rights, and an additional $35 million was reportedly spent on marketing. The movie will be shown in about 1,500 theaters, but is expected to bring in only $3 million, according to packing.
But the abysmal box office is unlikely to disappoint men like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The massive $40 million bill was apparently seen as a bribe for President Donald Trump and his family, which has profited handsomely from its association with the White House. Amazon has government contracts, especially when it comes to AWS cloud services, and Bezos’ other endeavors, such as the space company Blue Origin, rake in billions more.
The First Lady hosted a White House screening of her film in the East Room at Saturday nightthe same day federal agents in Minneapolis killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti. Apple CEO Tim Cook attended the event at the White House, which was criticized and called for a boycott of Apple products. Cook sent an internal memo to the company on Tuesday saying he spoke with the president personally, though it’s unclear what was said. Cook called the “de-escalation,“Although it’s also not clear what that means. Given Tim’s charm with the Trump regime, he could be implying that the people who are under siege in Minnesota right now should back off.
Amazon didn’t give critics early access Melaniawhich isn’t really a great sign, but Letterboxd already does flooded with people panning the movie. “I really don’t mind, do I? ½ star,” wrote one reviewer, a reference in the jacket worn by Melania Trump at the height of the child separation policy in Donald’s first term.
The movie is also being released overseas, although sales are expected to be worse there. UK ticket sales are “soft,” the head of a London theater chain told the Guardian. The first Friday afternoon screening of Melania at their flagship theater in London is sold out a ticket.
