Wakefield recorded their first win of the Betfred Premiership season with an 18-16 away win over Huddersfield at the AKU Stadium.
The visitors had built a 14-point cushion within 65 minutes but two late shots from George Flanagan Jr ensured the game remained even until the end.
Trinity opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a two-handed pass to Cam Scott who was waiting in the corner for a save.
The Giants only trailed for 11 minutes before Sam Halsall leveled with a fine strike from the corner, but Lachlan Walmsley restored Wakefield’s four-point advantage seven minutes before the break.
Nicotmo’s shot against Huddersfield Town
Trinity began to turn things around after the break, with Walmsley running comfortably through for their second of the afternoon with 55 minutes remaining.
The visitors extended their lead to 14 points in the 63rd minute when Seth Nikotemo raced through the Giants defense to try for a shot which was scored by Max Jowitt shortly after Oliver Pratt had prevented Jacob Gagai from scoring at the other end.
Five minutes later Huddersfield reduced the deficit to eight points when Flanagan sprinted onto the ball and slipped before scoring with a tap-in.
They reduced the gap to two points shortly after Flanagan scored for a second time and again, but Wakefield held on to condemn Huddersfield to a second successive defeat.
“We are nervous again”
Wakefield manager Daryl Powell admitted it made for a tense ending. “I don’t think we should be in this position,” he said.
“I thought we gave Huddersfield some control and unlocked themselves. I thought we looked tight last week and then I thought we looked tight today too, especially in those tight periods at the end of the game.
“There are a lot of positives, but there are also a lot of things you can’t do. The way the game is played is completely different now.”
Huddersfield boss Luke Robinson said it was a painful defeat: “It’s really heartbreaking isn’t it. I thought we had all the momentum in the second half and especially in the latter stages.
“As the game went on I thought we got into the game. The way the lads fought until the end was admirable and it showed character and work ethic.”
