Verizon experienced a major outage on Wednesday, with more than 2 million customers their devices are reported to be inoperable.
In a comment to CNET sent Wednesday, a Verizon spokesperson apologized for the outage, saying it was still ongoing and promised the company would issue credits to affected customers:
Today, we let most of our customers down and for that, we are truly sorry. They expect more from us.
We are working non-stop and making progress. Our teams will continue to work through the night until service is restored for all affected customers.
We’ll make it right – for any customers affected, we’ll issue account credits and share updates soon.
In an earlier comment to CNET, Verizon confirmed the disruption, saying, “Verizon’s engineering teams are continuing to resolve service disruptions today.

The absurdity of phones made stuck in SOS mode. Although the outage is slowly starting to resolve, with some users restoring service to their phones, others claim Down detector that their phone briefly started working again, but then went back into SOS mode. User reports about Downdetector top over 180,000.
“I’ve heard people get service back but can’t make any calls or do anything, happened to me here in Tampa, back for 3 minutes then back to SOS,” wrote one commenter. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent company as CNET.)
A statement on Verizon’s website currently says, “Verizon is aware of an issue affecting wireless voice and data services for some customers. We are working to restore service as soon as possible.”
Some carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile are quick to mock their competitors while touting their own services. They took to X to find out that if their customers’ calls don’t go through, it’s not an issue on their end, but on Verizon’s.
Outages like this, while rare, can make technology seem out of date landlines are attractiveeven in the age of smartphones.
