Mason Mount out ‘for weeks’

Manchester United will again be without midfielder Mason Mount for “several weeks”, with new manager Ruben Amorim pledging to help the England man recover.

Mount limped off after 14 minutes of United’s 2-1 win over rivals Manchester City last weekend and avoided defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.

The former Chelsea man missed four months of last season with a calf injury and has made just 12 appearances this term due to multiple setbacks.

As for how long Mount will be out before Sunday’s visit to Bournemouth, Amorim said: “A couple of weeks.

“I don’t know the exact date but it will be out for a long time. In that sense, it is part of football and we continue.

“What I can do is help Messi, teach him how to play our game when he recovers. Try to use that time to think about different things, and then I think the worst thing is that we don’t have time to train when you’re recovering from a lot of injuries.

“We always travel, we have games, so we don’t have all the squad together for training and it’s really hard to recreate the game before they come into the game. It is really difficult for a player to be out for so long and he is trying really hard.

Luke Shaw will also be unavailable for Bournemouth, but Marcus Rashford remains in contention.

Amorim again left Rashford out of his matchday squad for the midweek fixture with Tottenham, purely down to “selection” but it came 48 hours after the United academy product declared himself “ready for a new challenge”.

After Rashford was also absent from the win at Manchester City, asked if the omission was for disciplinary reasons, Amorim said: “No, it’s the same thing, the same thing. Exactly the same thing.”

Asked if Rashford could face Bournemouth, Amorim said: “Yes, of course.”
