EPA/ShutterstockVenezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado appeared in Oslo, Norway, after winning the Nobel Peace Prize, waving from the balcony of a grand hotel after months in hiding.
Machado traveled in secret despite a travel ban and has kept a low profile since Venezuela’s disputed 2024 presidential election. Her last public appearance was in January.
On Wednesday, Machado was on the balcony as the crowd cheered below, placing her hand on her heart and singing with supporters before stepping outside to greet them in person.

The Nobel Institute awarded Machado the Peace Prize this year for her “struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy” in Venezuela.
Machado then walked outside to greet her supporters, who waited behind metal barricades in the street.
“Maria!” “Maria, here!” they shouted in Spanish, many holding their phones high to record the historic moment.
At one point, Machado climbed over a fence and joined them.

The Nobel committee shared audio of Machado declaring: “I’m going to Oslo, I’m on my way.”
After receiving the peace prize, Machado made a point of praising U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been open about his ambitions to win the peace prize but amid ongoing military tensions with Venezuela.
Wednesday, Trump announced that the U.S. military had seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. His government claimed the ship was subject to sanctions and was involved in “illegal oil transportation networks that support foreign terrorist organizations.”
The Venezuelan government accuses the United States of theft and piracy.
