Marco Rubio orders Rubio State Dept to stop using Calibri Font in anti-dei push

Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent a memo on Tuesday ordering everyone in the US State Department to use the new Roman times for all government documents, according to The New York Times. What’s behind Rubio’s sudden obsession with fonts? The secretary thought of the current typeface in use, calibri, very awake.

Rubio’s memo is titled “Back to Tradition: Times New Roman 14-Point Font Required for All Department Papers,” According to Times and Rabaewho obtained a copy of the memo.

“To restore the decorum and professionalism of the department’s written work products and eliminate another defunct deia program, the department is returning the new Roman hours as its standard type,” said its cable.

Deia stands for diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. And it’s that last part about access that matters when the State Department first switches to the typeface Calibri in January 2023 under President Joe Biden. Sans-Serif fonts like Calibri are easier for people with some visual disabilities to read. Screen readers that use optical character recognition (OCR) and text to speech do too better Processing Sans-Serif Fonts.

Calibri will be the default font in Microsoft Office until the summer of 2023, when Microsoft releases Aptos. Meanwhile the company just made the switch six months After the State department decided to make Calibri the commonly used typeface, aptos is also a Sans-serif font and is more accessible to the visually impaired.

The community of r/Tistography There were many jokes about the new order, including “there’s a new serif in town…” and “Serif tariff.” Another quote replied, “Kerny Joke.”

Rubio and other members of the Trump Administration have been tasked with purging anything deemed “Dei” within the government. That effort is clearly part of President Donald Trump’s broader mission to make the US whiter and more male-dominated as well as hard-edged by others.

“This format forms the basis of the President’s voice for the direction of America’s foreign relations, emphasizing the Department’s responsibility to present a unified, professional voice in all communications,” the memo said.

Government typefaces may seem like a mess, labeled as one of the “Cultureure War” issues. But ordering a return to use in the new Roman times is all part of the larger project itself. The goal is to liberate and expel any groups that may be hostile to a Neo-Fascist Agenda.

Trump refused to recognize World AIDS Day on December 1, the first time ever 1988. The President dropped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a free admissions day in National Parks, rather than repling it on his birthday in June. Piece by piece, Trump seeks to transform the US into a more authoritarian and less inclusive place. And the switch from Calibri might seem like small potatoes, but it’s a clear fuck-you to anyone who hasn’t jumped on the train bandwagon.
