The man accused of setting fire to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s mansion in April was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison as part of a plea deal.
Cody Balmer, 38, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, aggravated arson, 22 counts of arson, burglary and other crimes during a court hearing on Tuesday.
Although the mansion in Harrisburg, the state capital, was severely damaged by the fire, those who were home at the time — including Shapiro, his wife, his four children, guests and staff — all escaped unscathed.
Shapiro said his family supports the plea deal announced by prosecutors.
The attacks on the governor and his family are part of a wave of political violence in the United States that has included an attempt to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, two assassinations of President Donald Trump, the killing of two Minnesota officials and the slaying of commentator Charlie Kirk.
Standing with his wife at a press conference on Tuesday, Pennsylvania’s governor said his family has had to lean on their faith during the difficult recovery process since the attack.
“We will be forever changed by this, and we know time will heal, but the scars will always be there,” Shapiro said.
Ballmer is accused of breaking into the governor’s mansion and setting it on fire on the second day of Passover. The governor was Jewish and had held a Passover celebration the night before.

Officials said he turned himself in within 13 hours of the break-in and admitted to “having a grudge against Governor Shapiro.”
Ballmer was asked in a police interview what he would do if he were confronted by Shapiro. He told police he would hit the governor with a hammer, according to an affidavit.
Shapiro has served as Pennsylvania’s governor since 2023 after serving as Pennsylvania’s attorney general.
The Democrat was one of the top choices to be Kamala Harris’ running mate during the 2024 presidential election, but was ultimately eliminated. He is often considered a possible future presidential candidate.
