Samuels spent nearly two decades as an educator in New York City public schools and was known for promoting racial diversity through school consolidation and for working to dismantle gifted and talented programs, which some critics said were racially biased, City & State reported.

The school principal is responsible for supervising The nation’s largest public school systemeducates more than 900,000 students in approximately 1,600 schools and employs approximately 135,000 people.

Samuels led school mergers aimed at racial integration while overseeing the de Blasio administration’s efforts to increase diversity at some Brooklyn high schools, Chalkbeat reported.

Samuels also supports the International Baccalaureate program, which he says aligns with his philosophy of investing in teachers while expanding opportunities for students, the New York Post reported.

Samuels’ appointment would be in line with Mamdani’s campaign promise to reshape education policy under his government.

The publication added that Samuels will replace outgoing school principal Melissa Aviles-Ramos, who is reportedly seeking to stay on.

Mamdani will be sworn in as New York City’s next mayor on Thursday, January 1.
