When news about Maggie Gyllenhaal bold, punk rock-infused Bride of Frankenstein riff began to filter, an early narrative that it was called musical. Some of these may be under The Bride! co-star Peter Sarsgaard, who is also Gyllenhaal’s husband, give an interview where he describes the film’s “big dance numbers,” and people naturally connect the dots.
But to hear Gyllenhaal tell it, The Bride! not, in fact, something that should be classified within the musical genre, despite the mention of dancing and the fact that its main stars (Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale) are known actors who also sing well. This is not BAD or Chicagoin other words.
Talked to Fun every weekthe writer-director set the record straight: “Can we just put the thing about it being a musical? It’s not a musical at all. That’s a different form. I don’t know why that’s going on.”
However, that is not to say that Sarsgaard is a liar. Those big dance numbers? They are really there. Bale’s character, “Frank,” is a big moviegoer, and his favorite star is a song-and-dance man played by Jake Gyllenhaal, the brother of the writer-director.
“He’s an amazing singer, and I love hearing him sing,” Maggie Gyllenhaal said of her multi-talented brother. “When you sit through all the credits, at the end is one of his beautiful songs that he sang. That was a live, exciting connection, working with him on set.”
But the “musical” elements are not just content The Bride!Cinema screens in the universe. Bale and Buckley also cut a carpet on screen, including “a huge tap dance sequence,” as Buckley told EW, which you can see in the film’s trailer.
So to recap: The Bride! not a musical in the traditional sense, but it definitely has some of that flavor in there. We’re in awe of every new detail we learn about what looks to be an unconventional monster romance, which hits theaters March 6.
