Greg Gambell, Who broadcasts the NFL CBS host and served as studio host of the network’s March Madness, has died at age 78.
Gambell’s family said in a statement that he died of cancer.
Marcy Gambell and Michelle Gambell wrote: “After a courageous battle with cancer, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by love. Greg was as stoic, as one could hope for. Treated his illness with grace and positivity.”

Emmy Award Winners Producer Dan Foer Gumbel announced his death in a Facebook post.
“The holidays should be filled with joy, but they are often mixed with sadness. I just learned that my dear friend Greg Gumbel has passed away,” he wrote via the New York Post .
“Greg is the best announcer a young producer/director could have because he’s extremely inclusive and never loses his cool – except at 2 a.m. when we’re filming a Super Bowl anti-drug benefit in the South Bronx Gunfire erupted during commercial break and that was the only time Greg raised his voice and said something to me that I deserved.
“In addition to being a true professional, he was a kind, great man. May his memory be a precious blessing to his family and friends.”

Gumbel missed last year’s game due to “family health issues.”
Gumbel officiated the 2001 Super Bowl, becoming the first African American to officiate a major sports championship. He is the older brother of longtime “Real Sports” host Bryant Gumbel.
Before making his name at CBS, Greg worked at MSG, ESPN and WFAN in New York, anchoring New York Knicks and Yankees games and hosting SportsCenter.
He has also served as the anchor for multiple Olympic Games and last served as the anchor for an NFL game in 2022.

When the game ended, fans heard Gumbel’s voice March Madness Bracket was announced.
