The summer transfer window was one of the most high-profile we’ve ever seen at Anfield liverpool A lot of effort was spent to support Arne Slaughter‘s team.
Fresh off winning the league title, it was time to make the most of it and there was more to come as they acquired elite level players such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
On paper, the Reds have won the transfer window, but it hasn’t all been plain sailing for some of their new signings.
That said, Hugo Ekitike and especially Florian Wirtz have become active recently. Wirtz finally looks like a player worth over £100m. He has scored six goals and provided two assists in his last ten games for Liverpool.
Things are quieter during the winter window as they spend a lot of money, but there may be some late action.
Liverpool looking for last-minute transfer at Anfield
Liverpool’s forward line is starting to make noise again but they need defensive reinforcements. They will be frustrated at missing out on Manchester City’s Marc Gueye but have been tracking the young French defender from Rennes, Jeremy Jaquet as potential replacement.
Anfield’s transfer chief has also been considering signing a new full-back following Conor Bradley’s long-term injury. Well, their latest goal is to kill two birds with one stone.
In fact, according to reports from multiple sources, they have already set their sights on Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida.
Fabrizio Romano claims “Club-to-club negotiations” are ongoing, but According to David Ornstein of The Athleticthis is not an easy deal to complete.
Giltruida is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig in Germany and any move would require the Bundesliga side to break the deal. However, the Black Cats are keen to ensure they have a replacement in the building before he leaves.
Ornstein claimed there was a 75% chance of a deal being struck before Monday’s 7pm deadline.
Why Gil Truida could be Liverpool’s new Fabinho
There is no doubt that Liverpool need a defender. They also need a defender in the summer.
It looks like Guehy is ready to move to Anfield, having said goodbye to Crystal Palace and a move has been agreed. However, their plans were scrapped when the Eagles were unable to find a replacement.
Six months later, to the shock of Anfield fans, he is now a Manchester City player. During this period, Liverpool’s defense has been in trouble.
Arne Slott said earlier this season that Ibrahima Konate has been at the “crime scene” too many times this season, referring to his mistakes, and despite his improvement in form, overall the Reds are nowhere near where they will be in 2024/25.
Center back isn’t the only problem, and that’s where Gil Truida comes into play.
The 25-year-old has played in a variety of positions so far this season, including six at centre-back, meaning he could fill in for Konate. He could also replace Bradley at right-back, having done so twice in 2025/26 and 163 times in his senior career.
However, the Netherlands international is also a capable defensive midfielder, having played the position on four occasions for Sunderland.
Liverpool have many versatile players at the moment. Player of the season Dominik Szoboszlai has played in midfield and at right-back, but perhaps Fabinho is most similar to Gertruida, certainly in position.
When the Brazilian signed for the club in 2018, he did so as a defensive midfielder. However, in the early stages of his career, Fabinho often played defensively, much like Gil Truida.
In fact, the former Liverpool star played 29 times at right-back during the 2015/16 season with Monaco. He also excelled in the role, scoring six goals and providing four assists. As it happens, the combative midfielder also made 37 appearances at centre-back during his career, displaying amazing versatility.

There are many shared properties here as well. Fabinho is a tenacious and determined player, as is Gil Truida. As scout Antonio Mango sayshe is a “powerful” ball-handler who also “exudes elegance on the ball”, just like Fabinho.
Liverpool have arguably been looking for a player to replace the Brazil international for some time now, and while Giltruida will be a left-field player, it would be a no-brainer.
That said, don’t expect to see him in the midfield too much. This is a signing with a lot of defense in mind.
