Match preview for Manchester City vs Newcastle
Eddie Howe admits the odds are stacked against Newcastle when they travel to the Etihad for the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City, but promises his side will give it their best shot.
City lead 2-0 after the first leg at St James’ Park, thanks to goals from Antoine Semenyo and Ryan Cherky.
It leaves Newcastle with an uphill task if they are to overturn the tie and return to Wembley.
“We have to be very confident,” Howe said. “The second goal in the first game was obviously a big disappointment for us, coming so late, but we still believe and we have to believe.
“I believe we have players who can go into any stadium in the world and perform and score goals. I think the group has a collective spirit.
“It will be an almighty challenge – there is no greater challenge away from Manchester City. I think we say every time we play them but we believe in ourselves and are going to give it a good go.”
Newcastle’s form, especially on the road, gives little cause for optimism. They have won just two of 12 away games in the Premier League this season and were beaten 4-1 at Liverpool on Saturday night.
For City, the chance to add more silverware to Guardiola’s collection may end in his tenure.
Rumors that this will be his final season at the club are refusing to go away and that he would prefer to leave on a high, although he knows the tie is far from over.
“We have a chance to get to our fifth final in 10 years in the Carabao Cup,” he said. “I prefer to start 2-0 but I know very well how many times we have played Newcastle – they have pride. They are a Champions League team and it will be a tough game.
“We have to be ready and play our game for our people, our fans and try to get to Wembley in March.”

City will be without Marc Gueye, who is unfit, but fellow January signing Semenyo could play as he was brought in ahead of the first leg. Ruben Dias is back in training but this game comes too soon and he will be joined by Jeremy Doku. Cherki will be evaluated today.
Newcastle will again be without injured captain Bruno Guimaraes and Luis Miley is also unavailable. Sven Boatman is fit.
