Atleti took the lead in the 19th minute when Alex Baina broke the deadlock by lifting over John Garcia after latching on to Nahuel Molina’s long ball over the top. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR check revealed that Baena had been onside.
Rafinha rounded off Jan Oblak to equalize seven minutes later, and it looked as if Barca would complete the turnaround in the 36th minute when Pablo Barrios brought on Dani Olmo.
Lewandowski stepped up but lofted his penalty over the crossbar, preserving parity for Atleti, who were then grateful to Oblak for keeping out Pol’s point-blank header from Lamin Yamal’s right-wing cross.
Barca went into Tuesday’s match One point ahead of Real Madrid in LaLiga title race, but they would drop points against Atleti, handing the initiative back to Los Blancos.
Madrid face Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.
