The Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit Wednesday to block the president’s Donald Trump‘s face appears on next year’s national park pass.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleges that the Trump administration violated the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act by replacing the winning photo in the National Park Foundation’s annual public lands photography contest with a photo of President Trump.
“Trump’s use of a close-up of his own face to obscure the majesty of America’s national parks is the crudest and most self-driven act yet,” Kierán Suckling, the center’s executive director, said in a statement. “National parks are cherished by Americans of all stripes. Their timeless power and magnificence transcend the most bitter political divisions, quietly bringing all Americans together.”
Suckling continued: “What Trump did was disgusting. Politicizing America’s Most Sacred Sanctuary He put his face on national parks just as he put his company name on buildings, restaurants and golf courses. “

The executive director added that national parks “are not a personal branding opportunity.”
“They are the pride and joy of the American people,” he asserted.
According to the lawsuit, the 2026 America the Beautiful pass should feature photos of Glacier National Park, the winner of the photo contest.
“The Department of Interior (DOI) replaced it with a close-up of President Trump’s face,” the center said, adding that the Glacier National Park photo was “unlawfully included” in the new “nonresident” pass.

The center argued that the Trump administration violated the law by using photos “that were not taken on federal land and not entered into a public contest and by creating new resident and nonresident passes that are expressly prohibited by law.”
“America the Beautiful means wild rivers and majestic mountains, not avatars of bloated, fragile, attention-seeking selves,” Suckling said. “It’s nothing to see.”
On November 25, DOI announced the launch of “Beautiful America has passed” aims to put “America’s families first” with a new resident-focused fee that will be implemented starting January 1, 2026. The passes include photos of animals, parks, Trump with George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt, the president most associated with the creation of America’s national parks.
