KPop Demon Hunters it seems very likely that both will be picked up Oscars it’s nominated for—Best Animated Feature and Best Song (for “Golden,” now enjoying another resurgence thanks to the Olympics)—when Hollywood’s biggest awards show takes place next month. But even if not, its achievements are already staggering. It’s on Netflix most watched movie forever, with a hit soundtrack broke its own share of records. Right now the long-awaited sale as the film finally begins to leak, the biggest question is still the most obvious: what will happen in the sequel?
In a new video interview with The deadlinethe film’s directing team, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, laughed when asked what was going on with their follow-up, as well as a more direct (if knowingly lewd) question about what to follow. That has been clarified KPop Demon Hunters 2 not an urgent job; late last year, it was estimated that aiming for a 2029 release. But even with hours ahead of its work, Kang and Applehans told the trade they still feel a lot of pressure — especially from themselves.
“We joke that we feel like we’re still working on the first movie,” Appelhans said, thanks to its continued success and now the big awards-season push. Now that the first publicity cycle KPop Finally nearing the end, they admit they need a “couch! couch! couch!” time, as did the members of Huntr/x who were exhausted from their movie tour.
But as for the sequel, the collaborators admit that they are THERE thinking about it. “You have to think about a lot of things beyond what was in the first movie to make that movie,” Kang pointed out. “You have to think about all the backstories, and you have to do that AROUND world to tell a part of that world.”
He continued. “In terms of pressure, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves for the first movie. And for me personally, I don’t see many people like me who get this position. And so I’m like, ‘I’m not going to blow it. It’s probably the only thing I’ve done in my career. So I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.’ So I pushed myself to make a movie I could be proud of, and my standards were very high. And so is Chris. Very high. And so it will be like whatever we do next. I don’t think anyone can push us as hard as we do ourselves. “
Hear that, Netflix? We have a feeling KPop Demon Hunters 2 don’t have time-crunch issues THE Stranger Things end did—but like that big goodbye, expectations for this project couldn’t be higher. At least Kang and Applehans have plenty of runway ahead of the highly anticipated movie.
