The fight marked Davis’ debut as he moved up from lightweight to 140 pounds. It also answers the more immediate question of whether his power and pressure can translate against a durable, experienced opponent who has distanced himself from the top fighters at heavyweight.
Early on, Ortiz made it work. He used his jab, stayed mobile, and chose spots to land clean punches while preventing Davis from getting into long offense. In some rounds, Ortiz’s movement and timing slowed Davis down, keeping the fight close.
Davis never changed his approach. He stayed in front of Ortiz throughout the opening round, going for the body even when the head shots didn’t land cleanly. Gunfire gathered quietly downstairs. Ortiz remained upright and competitive, but his movements slowed down as the fight wore on.
By the middle rounds, Davis was the one setting the terms. He pushes forward more consistently, spends more time in range, and keeps digging into the body. Ortiz continued to answer, but the exchange tilted toward Davis as the round wore on.
The end came too late. Davis knocked out Ortiz with a left hook in the 11th round. Ortiz beat the count and finished the round, but the effect remained. Early in the 12th, Davis landed another clean shot that knocked Ortiz down again. Ortiz struggled to his feet and the referee stepped in to stop the fight with about 15 seconds left.
Ortiz has fought long-term against elite opponents before, including Teofimo Lopez, but has never been beaten like this. Davis does this by staying patient and committing to a plan that doesn’t rely on any one moment.
The win moved Davis to a 14-0 record and got him off to a strong start in the junior middleweight division. More importantly, it shows that his pressure lasts late and his body work can determine a fight at this level.
Ortiz dropped to 20-3 after another rough night against top-tier opposition. He was competitive early, but the cost of absorbing consistent body shots showed up when it mattered most.
Davis has no doubts. He sidestepped the cards, finished the fight on his own terms, and showed that, at 140 pounds, his strength goes with him.
