O’Leary Ventures President Kevin O’Leary Joins ‘Varney & Co.’ to weigh the fate of fee refunds and Gen Z taking their parents to job interviews.
A growing number of hiring managers say they’re seeing a surprising new trend among Gen Z applicants: bringing a parent to the job interview processsometimes even on Zoom calls.
“Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary joined FOX Business’ Stuart Varney on ‘Varney & Co.‘ to assess the practice and what it indicates to employers.
‘The Big Money Show’ talks about the growing trend of young adults receiving financial help from their parents.
For O’Leary, the issue is not generational stereotypes, but independence. In today’s competitive labor marketargues, employers are looking for candidates who can think, decide and execute on their own. When a parent walks into the room, he says, that independence is immediately called into question.
“The first question I would ask the son or daughter, I would say, do you want me to hire your mother or you? What is she doing here?” O’Leary said, “That resume is going straight into the trash at one of my operations.”
“The Big Money Show” panel reacts to new data showing Gen Z hiring has collapsed while older workers are staying in the workforce longer.
He said the situation happened to him recently during a virtual interview.
“It happened to me on a Zoom call and I just said this is not going to work… Your mother is not going to be part of this discussion,” he said.
LARRY KUDLOW: WHY ARE GEN ZERS SO GROUNDED, DEPRESSED AND UNEMPLOYED?
Beyond optics, O’Leary sees the move as a red flag for employers assessing risk.
“It means you can’t do it on your own. … It’s a horrible sign,” O’Leary said, calling it “a very, very bad idea.”
