Kalvin Phillips: Manchester City midfielder joins Sheffield United on loan on deadline day Football News

Kalvin Phillips has completed a loan move from Manchester City to Sheffield United for the remainder of the season.

The 30-year-old midfielder has played just seven minutes of Manchester City’s Carabao Cup ties this season.

sky sports news He has been told there is interest from other clubs but Phillips is keen to return to Yorkshire to revive his career.

Phillips spent eight years at Leeds United, making 214 appearances, before moving to Manchester City in 2022 for £42 million.

He was part of the team that won the Treble in his first season at the club but made just 21 appearances in all competitions and 12 in the Premier League.

He made 32 appearances for Manchester City in total and spent parts of the past two seasons on loan at West Ham United and then on loan at Ipswich Town in the Premier League. He last played in the Championship for Leeds United in 2020.

Phillips also made 31 appearances for the England national team and was a key figure in the team’s run to the 2020 European Cup final. But his last appearance for the England national team was in 2023.

It is thought City will still pay the bulk of Phillips’ wages during his loan spell at Bramall Lane.

Redknapp: Phillips wants to take risks

sky sports’ Jamie Redknapp:

“It’s sad because one wrong move could have jeopardized everything. He could have gone elsewhere and become a regular starter.

“He goes into Manchester City and goes toe-to-toe with Rodri, doesn’t win that battle and then suddenly you’re a bit lost.

“He played in some cup games and didn’t perform well and the team lost. Instantly the manager loses a little confidence in you.

“He wants to play football and that’s a good thing. He wants to take the risk and play for Sheffield United. I hope everything goes well.”

Analysis: Phillips joining Sheffield United could trigger a career rebuild

Ben Ransom of Sky Sports News:

“It’s just not successful yet. Calvin Phillips exist Manchester Cityand reaching the tournament might just be the move that finally allows him to rebuild his career.

“Back in the summer of 2022, he was one of two Leeds boys that Manchester City signed for a similar transfer fee, the other being Erling Haaland. I spoke to them during the club’s pre-season in the United States that year and they were all excited about what the future might hold.

“Fast forward 12 months and they are both celebrating a historic treble but their career paths have gone in very different directions. Haaland is indispensable; Phillips has been largely inactive.

“Despite his popularity within the squad, Phillips never earned Guardiola’s trust and, remarkably, he only started six games in all competitions for Manchester City.

“Failed loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town were false starts. Let’s hope a return to Yorkshire can be the spark to resurrect his career.”
