Justin Rose leads six shots ahead of Farmers Insurance Open final, record score in sight | Golf News

Justin Rose holds a six-stroke lead heading into the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines as he aims for a record tournament score and a 13th PGA Tour title.

Rose had four birdies on an impeccable front nine, including three in a row starting on the fifth hole, and then had three bogeys on his way home for a 4-under 68 to reach 21 under in San Diego.

The best winning scores in Farmers Insurance Open history were 22 under by Tiger Woods in 1999 and George Burns in 1987, so if the 45-year-old shoots 2 under or better on Sunday, he will break that record.

The biggest victory was when seven-time champion Woods defeated Ryuji Imada by 8 strokes in 2008. Rose won this tournament at 21 under in 2019, two strokes ahead of Adam Scott.

Following the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2023 and the FedEx St. Jude Championship last August, it will now take a slump on his part or a special situation from his opponents to deny him his second Torrey Pines title and third PGA Tour victory in three years.

American Joel Dahmen tied Rose’s 4-under for second on Saturday at 15 under, while Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune and South Korea’s Si Woo Kim were tied for third at 13 under, about eight shots behind the leader.

The day belonged to Germany’s Stephan Jaeger, whose 7-under 65 moved him up 39 spots in the leaderboard to tie for sixth at 11 under, while Ireland’s Seamus Power did the same after bogeying four of his final seven holes.

Brooks Koepka – playing in his first PGA Tour event since returning from LIV Golf – tied for 61st at 2 under. He hit a remarkable shot from the cart path to the first green in one over in the third round.
