Jos Buttler not planning to end England career anytime soon after record-breaking appearance ahead of T20 World Cup Cricket News


Jos Buttler is determined to prolong his England career following a “surreal” feeling after becoming England’s most capped player.

The 35-year-old made his 402nd appearance against Sri Lanka on Sunday, his 146th T20I, and has also played 199 ODIs and 57 Test matches.

Butler will be a key figure England look to win T20 World Cup live sky sports February 7 to March 8but the wicketkeeper-batsman also looked beyond the incident.

He said: “It’s amazing to play 400 games. It’s a bit surreal. The hunger and desire to play for England is always strong and burns bright.”

“At this age, people do start asking, ‘What are you going to do next?’ I don’t know, but I know I don’t really want to put a timeline on it.

“From talking to a few people, they said you know when the time comes, you might wake up one day and know it. I haven’t experienced that moment yet, so I’m just going to keep going until that moment comes.”

“Once you join the team, you think it’s the best thing ever and you just hope it lasts forever.”

“Seeing the badge is often all the motivation you need”

Speaking about his extensive run of games, Butler added: “I’m proud of myself for being able to play for such a long time, for being able to bounce back from tough times, to be hungry to improve, to keep showing up and working hard.

“I’ve always wanted to try and reach my potential. That’s been my biggest motivator over the years, and that’s ‘Can I get to the level that I think I can get to?’

“In a weird way, you might never get there, and that’s what makes you keep training, working hard, trying to get better.

“To be honest, I just love playing for England, what a special thing it is. A lot of times just looking at the badge on the chest or on the hat is enough to inspire you.”

Buttler helped England win the 2019 50-over World Cup final at Lord’s

When asked about his career highlights, Buttler said he won a 50-run Test at Lord’s World Cup in 2019 when he hit a half-century against New Zealand and then completed Martin Guptill’s run in the Super Over to help England win by the boundary.

“This will be my favorite day and it takes something special to top it,” he said.

Buttler added that his low-light performances in Test cricket, with an average of 31.94 in 200s and 18 fifties, were “a bit disappointing” and that his white-ball captaincy was “disappointing” after their exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy group stages.

The batsman said: “For me, I think Test cricket is the pinnacle. As a kid in 2005 (and watching the Ashes that year), that was always the thing.

“I think Test cricket challenges you in every aspect of cricket. I think it’s the ultimate test.”
