The 23-year-old gymnast is currently appealing a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that dropped her ranking from third to fifth in the women’s floor exercise final.

Romania’s Ana Barbosu initially received a higher score than the Chilean after the American completed a routine. Later, at the request of the American coach, the judges reviewed the footage and changed the score, elevating Chiles to third place, sparking initial controversy and backlash from the Romanians.

The decision to award Chiles the medal instead resulted in the first all-Black podium in Olympic gymnastics history, joining teammate Simone Biles and Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade.

But then, on the last day of the Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that Chile’s appeal had exceeded the one-minute deadline and changed her result, moving her back to fifth. The next day, August 11, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that Chile must return the medals.

However, after the Games in August, USA Today reported that Chiles and other members of the U.S. Olympic team “Unintentionally“They continue to appeal the IOC’s decision and demand the return of the medals.

Chiles’ lawyers argued that her coach did make the request in a timely manner and had video evidence to prove it, and said the official who made the decision to strip Chiles of the medal had ties to Romania.

“First, CAS violated Chiles’ fundamental ‘right to be heard’ by refusing to consider video evidence showing that her inquiry had been submitted on time – in direct contradiction to the findings of the CAS decision.

“Secondly, the entire CAS process was unfair because Chiles was not properly notified and Hamid G. Garavi, the CAS panel chairman who revoked Chiles’ bronze medal and awarded it to a Romanian gymnast, Gharavi has a serious conflict of interest: Gharavi has been a Romanian lawyer for nearly ten years and has actively represented Romania in CAS arbitrations.”

Chiles also appealed to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court to overturn the CAS ruling. She argued that she had not been given a fair opportunity to defend herself and that the CAS had not properly considered the video evidence.

Chiles and her teammates have been vocal about the emotional toll losing her medals took on her in the months after the Olympics.

“For me, everything that happened was not about the medal, it was about the color of my skin,” Chiles said.

Chiles previously claimed in a statement posted to X on August 15 that she faced “racial attacks” from social media users. When Chiles won the bronze medal, it was the first time in Olympic history that three black athletes were on the gymnastics podium.

“There were actually things that led to me becoming an athlete, but I felt like everything was taken away from me.”

The controversy has prompted international scrutiny of the judges who score the event. On August 15, the Center for Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) issued a joint statement condemning the ruling of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the referee team.

“If the International Federation of Gymnastics had established such a mechanism or arrangement, a lot of heartache could have been avoided,” the CAS task force said in a press release. “The expert team hopes that the International Gymnastics Federation will be able to intervene in this incident.” There are consequences for these three outstanding athletes, as well as other athletes and their support staff, so that this does not happen again in the future.”
