Sources familiar with the matter told MS NOW over the weekend that Jeffries spoke to Johnson and said Democrats would not provide the votes to fast-track the spending plan, which could jeopardize the end of this week’s government shutdown.
Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., told “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he would vote against the package at the meeting.
“I’m not just opposed, I’m staunchly opposed and I’m going to be advocating to my colleagues that they vote no,” Khanna said. “I cannot in good conscience vote to give ICE agents more money because they violate our constitutional rights.”
Democratic resistance to the package has made Johnson’s job of pushing it through more difficult. He holds a narrow 218-213 majority in the House, which will be further reduced with the election of Democrat Christian Menefee. win special election In Texas.
“Yes, I have a one-vote advantage through the rest of 2026,” Johnson said. “But we will prove again that this is a party that is serious about governing.”
