Joe Rogan laments declining Detroit auto industry: So many abandoned buildings, ‘You could buy a house there for $500’

The decline of Detroit’s auto industry is a story of glory turned to struggle. A city that once led the world now faces challenges competing in the market it helped build.

comedian Joe Rogan and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) discussed Detroit’s decline from its peak during an episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast in June. Rogan said he has long been a fan of the cars Detroit’s factories once produced and finds it “disgusting” to see the decline of a city that was once one of the wealthiest in the world.

Don’t miss:

“As someone who loves American cars, I’m a big fan of what Detroit did during that time,” Rogan said. “And to see what’s happened to Detroit now. There are so many abandoned buildings. It’s crazy. You could buy a house there for $500. It’s so crazy. Like giant factories where all the windows are broken, all the pipes are ripped out.”

Major Detroit automakers, including General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F), they face an intensity competition from Chinese car manufacturers. Ford and GM recently announced billions of dollars annotations linked to a planned pulled back in electric vehicle investments as they focus on gas and hybrid vehicles amid weak demand for electric cars.

Remember when everyone thought EVs were the future and investing in EV stocks was a surefire way to get rich? Even disruptive trends don’t move in a straight line, which is why it’s important to diversify your portfolio. With hundreds of released artworks and representative annualized net returns in the mid-teens on select releases, Masterpieces offers investors a way to diversify portfolios with long-term appreciation of art, without the need to directly purchase or manage a masterpiece.

Sanders said the decline of Detroit and other American business centers began when large corporations moved American jobs to China and Mexico to cut costs, taking advantage of workers willing to accept much lower wages.

“You asked me how it happens, why it happens, I think especially now and for many decades, you have the prevailing religion of the oligarchs and the business world is greed,” he said. “That’s it, I want it all and I don’t give a shit if I have to stomp on you, throw you out on the street, take away your social security. I want it.”

Rogan said offshoring jobs to other countries to save money is “unsustainable” and spoke of Michael Moorethe 1989 documentary “Roger & Me,” which examines GM plant closings in Michigan and their impact on local communities.

“This documentary is fantastic,” Rogan said. “It shows the impact of a corporation taking all of its factories, taking them away like that with no warning, no recourse, nothing that anyone can do. It basically decimates all of Detroit.”
