Elected mayor of New York City Zoran Mamdani NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch personally apologized to her team at a high-profile charity dinner in Manhattan on Wednesday night after her brother described him as an “enemy” of the Jewish people, the police said on Thursday.

Speaking at his Cocoa Chat community meeting, Mamdani stressed that the apology had been received and that he intended to govern for all New Yorkers.

“The commissioner apologizes to my team for these comments and I look forward to serving as mayor every new yorkincluding Jewish New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.

He stressed that the incident will not affect his working relationship with Tisch, who has chosen to remain police chief despite policy differences.

“The focus of my conversations with Commissioner Tisch was to ensure public safety while delivering justice to New Yorkers across the five boroughs,” he said. “She expressed her apology to the team. I’m grateful and my focus is back on delivery.”

NYPD spokesman Brad Weekes shared the commissioner’s message in a statement to Fox News Digital:

“I understand the fears of the Jewish community. I sincerely believe that the mayor-elect will fulfill his promise as mayor to serve all New Yorkers, including the Jewish community.”

Tisch’s brother, Benjamin Tisch, the billionaire CEO of Loews & Co., called Mamdani an “enemy” of the Jewish people in a speech at the Met Council’s annual gala, according to two attendees who spoke with Tisch. New York Daily News.

Witnesses to the gala, held at Manhattan’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel, described the moment as shocking, especially since Commissioner Tisch had recently agreed to remain at the helm of the NYPD under Mamdani’s incoming administration.

One attendee told the Daily News that the reaction in the room was stunned silence: “It was like, ‘Wow, he’s really going there.'” Benjamin Tisch has yet to comment publicly on the incident.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist and outspoken critic of Israel, has repeatedly denied accusations that his views on Israel are anti-Semitic.

Members of the Tisch family have donated more than $1 million to super PACs that oppose Mamdani and support the former governor during the 2025 mayoral race. Andrew CuomoAccording to the New York Daily News. Commissioner Tisch made no donations.

Last month, Mamdani told the New York Daily News: “The two of us are not going to shy away from the fact that we have differences on certain issues… but I also believe that those differences are not only reconcilable but are a sign of a healthy partnership going forward.”

The clashes took place just weeks before Mamdani’s January 1 inauguration.

Representatives for Mayor-elect Mamdani and Benjamin Tisch did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.
