Jermall Charlo is back in the gym training for his comeback and getting ready for his return to the ring in 2025.
Former undisputed junior middleweight champion Charlo (35 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, 19 KOs) lost to IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-pound champion Canelo Alvarez in 12 rounds. Have been off for 15 months. Effortlessly unanimous decision on September 30, 2023.
Fans on social media joked that Charlo, 34, spent the roughly $20 million in salary he received for the Canelo fight. Charlo hasn’t depleted his total earnings. He made the right decision to resume his career. Gemel could make a lot of money if he fought in Riyadh using one of Turki al-Sheikh’s cards.
The 154-pound division has come a long way in the last year since Charlo won four belts in the weight class, and now it’s questionable whether he can beat any of the top fighters. He’s been out for too long and there’s more top talent now than there was when Jermell held the belt.
Fans would be interested if Alsheikh offered Gemel a match against one of the following talents:
– Israel Madrimov
——Serhy Bokhachuk
—Virgil Ortiz Jr.
——Charles Cornwell
——Bahram Murtazhaliev
——Sebastian Fundora
——Terence Crawford
– Sander Zayas
——Joniz Traz
– Tim Tsyo
If you’re from Turki, the easiest fight to organize is Jermall vs. IBF champion Murtazaliyev. Crawford won’t agree to fight Charlo unless he’s offered a big bonus, perhaps more than what he got for his Aug. 3 fight against Madrimov.
Most of these fighters will beat the version of Jermell who lost to Canelo and have fights with Brian Castano and Tony Harrison. The 154-pound class has changed again and for the better. Charlo will turn 35 on May 19, which is not young for any weight class.
If Charlo does come back, he needs to stay active instead of fighting once and then disappearing for a year. He has competed every year since 2020. He did not fight in 2024 and took a break after earning a large bonus against Canelo.
