England white-ball captain Harry Brook has walked back his initial comments about a clash with a New Zealand nightclub bouncer, with reports that Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue are now under investigation.
Brooke was fined £30,000 and given a warning for his conduct by the England and Wales Cricket Board following the incident in Wellington the night before the November 1 International, which saw England suffer a 3-0 series defeat by two wickets.
The 26-year-old had insisted he was alone but has now released a statement saying he “regrets” the comments and was protecting his teammates following the incident. telegraph Batsman Bethel and fast bowler Tongue were reportedly fined for their roles and are also being investigated by cricket’s governing body.
Cricket’s governing body, a body independent of the ECB, has the power to bring dishonorable charges, including fines and suspensions, if it finds enough evidence.
sky sports news The European Central Bank and cricket regulators have been contacted for comment.
Brooke vows to learn from ‘challenging times’
Brooke’s statement read: “I take responsibility for my actions in Wellington and acknowledge that others were present that night.
“I regret my previous comments and my intention was to protect my teammates and avoid situations that would have resulted from my own decisions.
“I have apologized and will continue to reflect on the matter. This is a challenging time in my career but I am learning from it.
“I recognize that I still have more to learn about leadership and the off-field responsibilities that come with captaincy.
“I remain committed to growing and improving personally and professionally in this area.”
Brooke, Bethell and Tongue are part of the England squad that will feature in the T20 series in Sri Lanka and the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
Brooke’s misdemeanor was made public on the final day of Australia’s 4-1 Ashes match earlier this month and he said after arriving in Sri Lanka that he was lucky not to lose his position as limited-overs captain.
The Yorkshireman apologized to his teammates and used humor to try to win their trust as he celebrated his 57-ball hundred in the third and final ODI in Sri Lanka. England won by 53 runs and won the series 2-1 – by executing WWE legend “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s “Beer” move.
England Cricket Board general manager Rob Key said he did not believe the team had a drinking culture after players including Brooke were pictured drinking during breaks in the Australian resort of Noosa during the second and third Ashes Tests this winter.
Shortly after Key addressed the media, an unconfirmed video emerged of batsman Ben Duckett appearing to be drunk.
On the final day of the Ashes, ECB chief executive Richard Gould issued a statement saying a “thorough review” was already underway, covering “travel planning and preparation, individual performance and conduct, and our ability to adapt and respond effectively as circumstances require”.
Players are under midnight curfew during Sri Lanka tour.
