Israeli air strikes on Yemen’s main airport

Air strikes were reported on two cities in Yemen.

Witnesses and the ruling Houthi rebels said the main international airport and a military base in the country’s capital, Sanaa, were hit, as was a power station in the western port city of Hodeidah, AFP reported.

Israel said the attack was carried out by its air force and targeted Houthi “military infrastructure”.

The casualties were unclear from initial reports. In recent days, Israel has warned that it is preparing to launch large-scale attacks against the Houthis after they fired drones and missiles at Israeli cities.

“(Israeli) fighter jets conducted intelligence-based strikes against military targets belonging to the Houthi terror regime on the west coast and in the interior of Yemen,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

“The targets of the IDF attacks included military infrastructure used by the Houthi terrorist regime for its military activities at Sana’a International Airport and at the Herziaz and Ras Al-Kanatib power stations.”

Houthi rebels have been attacking Israel since the first months of the Gaza war, which began in October 2023.

Israel has retaliated with intermittent strikes against the Houthis.

Earlier this week, Israel’s defense minister said the country was preparing a “severe attack” on the Houthis, warning it would “decapitate” the group’s leadership.

The Houthis are a political and religious armed organization supported by Iran. The group has ruled much of western Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since overthrowing the internationally recognized government in 2015.
