Israel ordered the evacuation of the building, which was evacuated by Iran-backed group Hezbollah, carried out air strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday.

The attack took place, despite the ceasefire coming into effect five months ago, ending the conflict between Israel and military groups.

Israel said it was a “precision guided missile” targeting Hezbollah stores, “a threat to Israel and its civilians.”

The Lebanese presidency condemned the strike and called on the United States and France (which prompted a ceasefire in November) to urge Israel to stop attacks on the country.

The attack marks the first time Israel has attacked the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahieh – where Hezbollah is located.

This will put further pressure on the ceasefire. Despite the deal, Israel is linked to Hezbollah almost every day. The Israeli government said it would respond to any threats from Hezbollah.

Western officials said on condition of anonymity that militant groups were largely in line with the truce, while accusing Israel of multiple violations, including air strikes and drone surveillance.

Live video circulated by Reuters showed huge smoke rolling in the target building one hour after Israeli troops issued evacuation orders to residents of the Hadas community.

The civil defense in Lebanon later said that no casualties were recorded and rescuers had put out the fire.

The Lebanese presidency said in a statement X after the strike that Joseph Aoun condemned the attack.

It wrote: “As a guarantee for the cessation of hostilities, the United States and France must assume their responsibility and force Israel to stop the attack immediately.”

“Israel’s continued destabilization will exacerbate tensions and put the region at a real threat to its security and stability.”

The Israeli government said it targets Hezbollah stores of “precision missiles”.

“The storage of missiles at this infrastructure site poses a blatant violation of understanding between Israel and Lebanon and poses a threat to Israel and its civilians,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel “does not allow Hezbollah to become stronger”.

It added: “The Dahiyeh community in Beirut will not be a safe haven for Hezbollah terrorist groups.”

“The strike caused panic and fear of re-violence among those desperate to return to normal,” Lebanon’s UN Special Coordinator Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert wrote on X.

She added: “We urge all parties to stop any action that may further undermine the understanding of hostilities.”

Earlier this month Israeli air strikes kill four people in southern Beirutincluding Hezbollah officials.
