“I knew he wanted to keep playing. Throughout the series, he wasn’t in as good a shape as he would have liked. I knew we were going to Sri Lanka and then we got the Ashes,” Clark pointed out.

“There’s a lot of cricket in between but I also think it could be a good opportunity for the new players to open up the batting and get some Test cricket before the first Ashes Test,” he added .

Clark believes Khawaja has earned the right to retire on his own terms after years of incredible performances. He felt retiring in his hometown in front of his family would be the perfect choice for him.

“Uzi has earned the right to do his own thing. But, I just thought maybe this might be the best time for him to do it on his own terms. The Sydney Test, in front of family and friends, what a great opportunity it is, ” concluded the former Australia captain.

Usman Khawaja participates in BGT 2024-25

Usman Khawaja has been an important part of Australia’s Test team over the years. The 38-year-old has so far scored 5592 runs in 77 Tests at an average of 44.38, including 15 centuries and 27 fifties.

However, he has struggled with his runs in the ongoing series, scoring just 141 runs in four Tests at an average of just 20.14. In the final Test match in Melbourne, he scored just fifty in the series.
