Just months after lobbying to ban Israel’s national football team from UEFA, Ireland agrees play israel National League games this fall.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has just approved a motion Call for a ban on Israel Back from UEFA in November. The FAI joins the Norwegian and Turkish football federations in calling for Israel’s expulsion over the country’s war in Gaza. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made a similar request. The motion was ultimately defeated.

FIFA has yet to issue a statement offering to play against Israel after calling for its expulsion in the autumn.
“In 2025, members of the FAI Assembly put forward a motion to vote to send a formal request to the UEFA Executive Committee for the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from UEFA competitions for violating UEFA regulations,” the FAI wrote.

“Members subsequently voted in favor of submitting a motion to UEFA, which the association submitted in November 2025. While consultations with UEFA officials were carried out, the association did recognize that UEFA’s regulations outline that if the association refuses to participate in a match, the match will be forfeited and further disciplinary measures may be taken, including possible disqualification from the competition.”
The two countries were drawn together in Nations League Group B3 on Thursday.

UEFA is reportedly moving towards Vote to suspend Israel In September, the motion was shelved due to the war in Gaza. FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced on October 3 that no action would be taken against the team following a historic peace proposal from President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Irish fans protest Israel’s involvement This has been the case across various sports leagues since Hamas attacked the Jewish state on October 7, 2023. Irish protesters held protests in Dublin on October 4, 2025, days before the second anniversary of the attacks, and later in the year elsewhere across the country, holding signs that read “Ban Israel from UEFA and FIFA” and “Israel is a terrorist state.”
In September, Irish fans held up a “Red Card to Israel” sign during a game against Hungary.
