Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor joins ‘Varney & Co.’ to discuss President Donald Trump’s plan to expand AI across the government.
A senior official involved in the The Trump administration’s new AI The “Tech Force” initiative offered a glimpse into the White House’s push to place AI engineers in federal agencies and overhaul how the federal government uses technology.
“This is a public-private partnership where we’re going to bring a thousand great engineers to the government to help us complete the modernization that’s so important to our American people and so important to making sure that technology is a first-class citizen within the government,” Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management, said Tuesday in “Varney & Co.“
With help from companies like Microsoft, Palantir, Salesforce and Snowflake, Kupor said the initiative is designed to integrate engineers into major federal agencies rather than centralize them in a single office, allowing technologists to work directly on modernization efforts at departments like the Treasury Department, Health and Human Services and the War Department.

Palantir, for example, already plays a key role in integrating artificial intelligence at the War Department, Kupor noted, pointing to the company as an example of how advanced technology can be effectively deployed within the government.
“Palantir is certainly a leader in this area, and what we want to do is make sure that other parts of the technology, other parts of AI come into government,” he explained.

“What happens today is that we rely heavily on contractors and consultants, as you may know. We don’t have that much local talent in core AI, modern software developmentand Tech Force is really about making sure that government can be a first-class citizen and attract those kinds of individuals, just like Palantir has done in government, but we also want to make sure that talent resides in government for the long term.”
Engineers brought in through Tech Force will be placed directly within agencies and supported through a structured program that includes professional development, a speaker series and engagement with private sector partners, Kupor said.
He said applications for the initiative are already coming in, with the administration expecting to begin bidding in the next 30-45 days.

At the end of the program, many workers are expected to move on to roles in the private sector, bringing with them experience gained working within the federal government.
“The whole goal is, agency by agency, to figure out what are the major modernization efforts and how do we make technology, how do we make AI really matter to the American people?” he said
