Belgian police raided several locations in the country as part of an investigation into corruption within the European Parliament.
Prosecutors said the alleged corruption was “under the guise of commercial lobbying” and several people were detained for interrogation.
According to officials, local police also searched the addresses related to the case.
Belgian newspaper Le Soir said the investigation is related to Chinese tech giant Huawei and its activities in Brussels. The BBC is approaching Huawei for comments.
“Corruption is reportedly conducted regularly from 2021 to today, with great caution under the guise of commercial lobbying and taking various forms, such as compensation for political stances or excessive gifts such as food and travel expenses, or regular invitations to football games,” the prosecutor’s office explained.
Le Soir reported that several lobbyists suspected of working at Huawei were detained in custody of allegedly bribing the European Parliament (MEP) to promote corporate trade policies.
A police source told AFP that there were no one among the people arrested on Thursday.
The prosecutor’s office told the newspaper that a total of 21 raids were carried out in Brussels, Flanders and Valonia.
The prosecutor’s office said the focus of the investigation was on “active corruption within the European Parliament” and “forgetting and using forged documents”, all within the framework of “criminal organizations”.
