Curling is one of the events of Winter Olympics where the public’s interest in sport seems negligible MANY at the time, and then for three weeks every four years, it became a global sensation.

There is something about watching a polished stone slide across the fiercely washed ice that carries us. This year, Team USA sent 10 players to compete in the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles curling competitions, with the men’s team led by skip Danny Casper and the women’s team led by Tabitha Peterson Lovick. (Fun fact: Lovick’s younger sister Tara is also on the team.)

All 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics The curling events take place at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium. The mixed doubles curling competition began on Wednesday, February 4, one of the few events that will take place before the opening ceremony. And in case you weren’t watching, the American team of Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse is currently undefeated after four matches in the round-robin portion of the competition.

Once the mixed doubles is over, the men’s and women’s competitions will begin and run through the final day of the Games on Sunday, February 22. You can watch every curling match live on the Peacock, and starting February 11, CNBC will air a Best of Curling recap show at 5pm ET most days until the end of the Games. What is curling, and what terms should you know?

The reality is that for most viewers, the Olympics is our only opportunity to watch curling, and the rules can be unclear if you’re a casual fan. Curling involves two teams, and the ice they play on is known as the PAGE. The men’s and women’s curling consists of two teams of four, while the mixed doubles competition has two teams, each with one man and one woman.

Teams take turns sliding down the heavy granite stones toward a circular ice target called a house. It consists of concentric circles, and there is one at either end of the sheet. In regular curling, each team slides eight stones; in mixed doubles, they slide five each end. There are usually 10 ends, which you can think of as a round or an inning, in a curling match.

Curling stones have no special name other than “stones,” and in official play, they weigh between 38 and 44 pounds. The goal of curling is to place your stones closer than your opponents to the center of the house. This is done by pushing the stones forward towards the playing field and then sweeping the ice with a brush or broom to influence the speed and direction of the stone (if a stone is touched while sweeping, it will be removed from the game). Each team is led by a skipwhich determines the strategy and placement of the stone.

Scores are counted at one point for each stone located on or touching the house closer to the tee than any stone belonging to the opposition at the end of each end.
