According to reports from Agence France-Presse and Reuters, continuous gunfire was heard near the central prison in Conakry, the capital of Guinea.
It was unclear who fired the shots or the cause of the gunfire near the presidential palace.
“I heard speeding vehicles and I rushed to the window and heard automatic gunfire,” Tierno Balde, an accountant who works nearby, told AFP, confirming similar accounts from other witnesses.
The shooting began shortly before 9am (09:00 GMT) and lasted just over half an hour, with gunfire ringing out rapidly, according to neighbors of the prison.
Security forces, including police and special forces, blocked the road to the prison on Tuesday morning, AFP reporters reported.
An armored vehicle belonging to the special forces can also be seen in front of the prison.
