Heather Gay knows the challenges of maintaining a flawless appearance—whether in front of the camera, through her lucrative beauty business or as a former member of the Mormon church.

“It’s because, for the first time in my life, I have a little bit of power and control over something that’s been confusing to me,” Gay said. Still, critics found ways to criticize the reality star.
“When I was heavier, I was a very vocal, harsh person, and everyone thought it was funny,” Gay said before explaining, “When I was lighter, I was an angry asshole.”

Despite the weight loss, a spokesperson for Atkins insists the only thing she has changed is the number on the scale.
“Everyone thinks I’m a different person now. I’m the exact same person,” Gay said. “I like the exact same foods. I like the exact same activities. I like the exact same people. The smallest change is who I am. The biggest change is my pants size. That’s it.”

“The hardest thing to reconcile is that the attention now being paid to my body and appearance is so positive, whereas before it was so negative.”

Gay is no stranger to putting on a brave face, using her voice and television stardom to speak out against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The best-selling author said she was taught from a young age that “perfection was achievable.” Mormon church.

“As a culture, you know when I was Mormon — we wanted our lives to be beautiful. We wanted our lives to be like Instagram squares, and I think we have a very gendered culture,” Gay said. “I think the culture permeates us and as women we have a lot of pressure to look a certain way. It’s a patriarchal culture and the only way you really have power or money is through your beauty. If that’s not your wheelhouse, that can be frustrating.”

Although Gay wrote in her Bad Mormons memoir and “Surviving Mormonism” In the docuseries, she was surprised to find so many people supporting her weight loss efforts rather than her desire to leave the church.
“I mean, everyone wants you to lose weight. Before and after, everyone was rooting for me. No one said, ‘Are you sure this is what you want to do? Are you sure this is a better choice for you or your family?'” she said.

“It’s shocking how commonly it’s celebrated— lose weight — but when you unload something heavier than my heart, mind, and soul, you’re going to be harshly criticized. But you lose a few pounds and you’re a hero. ”

She noted that in Mormon society, there is a certain “secrecy and shame” associated with being born imperfect. The mother of three is trying to change the narrative around bodies and personal beauty standards by maintaining open and honest communication within her own family of women.
“I want my girls to be able to focus on fueling our bodies so that they can be with us throughout life and accomplish all that we want them to do,” she said. “You have to remember that for most of my life people thought I was completely overweight. I didn’t think of myself as anyone other than myself.
“But I’m very aware of what the world expects of me and is disappointed in how I look. So being able to lose weight, feel healthy and support my body in a way that sets a good example for my daughters, and without shame or secrecy, is just a new chapter for me.”

Gay credits Atkins with helping her maintain her weight loss and providing her family with convenient snack options.
“My kids can see that I can stay healthy, maintain weight loss, and still eat delicious regular snacks and snacks,” she said.
“Like our cupboards are full, our refrigerator is full. We never have to jump in the car and go somewhere without asking if we want a protein shake. Do you need a bar? Do you need something to tide you over?”
